Newly manufactured plastic containers have poor adhesion to the inks and glues in screen printed, plastic and paper labels. This is due to a chemical incompatibility and the inability of the ink or glue in labels to “wet-out” the bottle surface.

Ensuring labels stay on during the shelf life of a bottle is very important to protect brand identity and image. To enhance the wet ability and adhesion capabilities of plastic bottles to label inks and glues, they need to be flame treated.

Flame treatment subjects a container to contact with a flame for only a few tenths of a second. This treatment oxidizes a very thin layer of the bottle’s surface creating an acceptable chemical bonding with the inks and glues in labels. Quick and efficient, flame treating solves label adhesion issues without slowing down production or distorting the bottle.

The AIS flame treater is a safe and reliable means for improving the wet ability and adhesion capabilities of plastic bottle surfaces to label inks and glues. Easy to use and operate, the system is available in two-burner or four-burner configurations. Flexible adjustments to burner height and width allow the unit to accommodate various container sizes.

With optional ignition control, the AIS flame treater saves energy by automatically shutting off the flame when no bottle is present. Integrated safety features monitor bottle flow for jams and line back-ups both in and out of the flame area. In addition, safety guarding around the flame treatment area prevents operator contact with burners.
